Five Types of Boundaries

Think about when you are most content with others and when you are most content with yourself. In both instances, you likely have boundaries that have been established and respected. On the flip side, in relationships where you find yourself frustrated, unheard, or upset (including your relationship with yourself), you may not have boundaries established, or the ones you do have need to be adjusted.
There are many different types of boundaries. The following five boundaries can help you thrive in your relationship with yourself and others:
Emotional Boundaries - Determine when you are taking on others’ distress and then set boundaries. For example: “I am not able to help you in that way, but I am here to listen if you need someone to talk to.”
Spiritual/Religious Boundaries - Safeguard your right to your own beliefs, practicing your religious/spiritual beliefs how you desire.
Digital Boundaries - Social media platforms (e.g., TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook) can result in endless scrolling. Set time limits for distracting apps, with time set aside to disconnect from digital devices.
Physical Boundaries - Inform others of the degree of physical closeness and physical touch you are comfortable with (if any at all) and the degree of privacy you need.
Work Boundaries - Establish clear boundaries with yourself and your coworkers. For example: inform those necessary (e.g., boss, coworkers) tasks completed and expectations; enable ‘do not disturb’ for work emails during out-of-office hours.
By setting boundaries, you are enhancing your well-being and strengthening your relationships with others.
